Pluto Ingress to Aquarius January 2024:  Out of the Shadows and Into the Future

Part One:  Pluto in Aquarius 2023…Initial Influence and Impressions

***This was written under the Pluto ingress to Aquarius on March 23, 2023 just as Pluto entered the sign for the first time in our lifetimes

Pluto shows us the dark side lurking under the surface.  Pluto doesn’t just tear down, or deconstruct, Pluto transformation is a process that delves to the very roots it seeks to change, a reckoning that cannot happen until we give up that which no longer serves us.  In Aquarius, the sign of the collective and of revolutionary ideas, where independence is asserted through rebellion and we move into a completely different paradigm of consciousness, anything that does not serve humanity as a whole will be usurped by Pluto’s transit here.  That means first things are brought to awareness, dragging them out into the open…this is most often as a result of “bad things happening” or “bad people revealed” or major collective upheaval that then requires long periods of time to process, and to resolve.  Saturn just came through this sign for the past 3 years, guiding, directing, and seeking to start the conversation.  None of the issues we face as Pluto transits this 0 degree back and forth will be NEW, but our ways of thinking about them absolutely have to be different.  Pluto is that which we do not confront, and when we don’t do something and heed the lessons, those things become that which haunts us. Pluto is control, Pluto is power. As Pluto moves through Aquarius for the next 20 years, power, over time, must shift to the hands of the collective, whatever that entails.

Will we stop seeing imaginary lines and borders as boundaries, and realize that this planet is home to humanity as a whole before its destruction at our very own hands becomes irreparable?  This is the challenge of the generation that will be born under this influence. Remember, these generational influences work to shift the collective as a whole toward the mission of those born during this time.  Pluto in Sagittarius in the mid 90’s through 2008 tore down and reconstructed religion and philosophy.  Pluto in Capricorn tore down and reconstructed economic systems and our reliance upon the authoritative structures that support us…and it’s not completely over just yet.  Pluto will re-enter Capricorn in June during Retrograde, and will also dip back in during 2023 and 2024…it will finally enter Aquarius to STAY in November of 2024.  We do not get past the intensity of the 0 degree until after THAT, it will remain very near this precipice through 2024.  What does this mean?  That the nature of the “Pluto problems” that we will FACE this entire time are of an Aquarian nature now, but the solutions proposed will continually be of a Capricornian structure, and humanity has to SEE FOR OURSELVES that the type of patriarchal control and intentional power struggle created by mass wealth at the top for few and poverty for everyone else does not work.  Hard work and lies about bootstraps do not cut it with Pluto in Aquarius severing all ties to what used to be known as “The American Dream.”

Aquarius emphasizes the tribe, and begins with the seeking out of like minds, ideologies that resonate, and groups that organize according to collective intent.  This can be special interests or grassroots campaigns, Pluto will reconfigure how we gather and with whom we gather…and any time humans start to gather in groups that are alike, there is dissent between groups, and we will have to work on how to coexist and work together as opposed to against one another.  Of course, this can inflame tensions as social structures are torn down and we begin to think about how we relate and communicate in a more intellectual way.

Aquarius is the collective, Aquarius is defined and structured social systems.  Don’t forget, Aquarius is traditionally Staurn ruled, and Uranus associated in modern terms.  Saturn is discipline and authority, Uranus is rebellion and awakening. Pluto unearths motivations behind what controls the collective, and this, to me, concerns authority in all of its forms, politics, media, “content” constantly ravenously consumed…hidden agendas will be unearthed.  That which influences consciousness will be purged, with an emphasis upon new ways of thinking, new modes of experience.  Pluto in Aquarius will confront the dark side of societal control…the mechanisms underlying the manipulative potentials of technology and social media are revealed, and the worlds built upon them will crash.  Remember, Pluto teaches by tearing things down.  This will be a time of revolution and innovation, to be sure, but it’s not born just of ideas, it’s born of problem solving, of cleaning up the mess that was left behind for us.

Consciousness will expand through tearing down barriers.  As opposition to Leo, Aquarius strips the ego.  Pride is in for a fall, especially unwarranted self-promotion or fake expertise.  The days of quick google skills sufficing for relevance and knowledge will be over, one way or another.  Pluto in Aquarius will separate the independent minds and intellectual growth from the ill informed and poorly educated with an unfounded and inflated grasp of their own knowledge.  Those born in the “Boomer” generation will face their Pluto opposition…Pluto was in Leo from 1939 to 1957.  It’s time to strip away the ego, and realize that the world has moved on, that the structures that this generation takes for granted as a part of reality will be decimated and reconstructed from the ground up.  This means resistance, Pluto opposition is tough, and requires a relinquishing of control and power long held by the generation being opposed. This happens at both a societal level and on a personal level.  This call to relinquish is a process that begins at the Pluto square that happens in midlife, in this case, the Pluto in Leo generation faced that square in the mid 80’s when the Pluto in Scorpio Generation was born.  It is now the Pluto in Scorpio generation who will begin to rebel against the powers that be, and who are challenged to rethink their own concepts of power and how they take their mission into the world.   Pluto in Scorpio is ready to take over, as Gen X, the Pluto in Libra generation has continued to fulfill their mission of restructuring how we define and think about relationships and social issues.  Pluto in Libra had a very very tough square during Pluto in Capricorn, and now get a break as this Air Pluto allows them to think clearly again, and to stand independent within relationships as opposed to being subjected to games of power and control or exercising obsession and control, for the first time since 2008.

Gender as a polarity construct is going to be redefined…the Pluto in Scorpio generation (obsession with sex and the reproductive) is squared by Pluto in the sign of androgyny, where gender is irrelevant as we move into a cerebral based paradigm of higher thinking vs base instinct.  We must rise above the instinctual in this transformation.  The asexual spectrum will be a point of note and more widely understood and accepted.  Right now, that is a community that isn’t even accepted or understood by any other part of the LGBTQI spectrum, they get treated like an aberration by the rest of the rainbow.  Pluto in Aquarius isn’t at all interested in what’s in anyone's pants, in any regard, and will tear down expectations and entitlements in regard to the bodies of other people.  Aquarius is detachment.

Time itself and how we perceive it is going to be revolutionized…linear constructs will become obsolete, and people will be feeling the call to live and operate within a rhythm that is more individual and personal, and less structured according to societal expectation.  Aquarius is freedom within the collective, and upholding principles that seek to contribute.  We can expect that the lasting impact of the pandemic making us realize that WE DO NOT NEED TO OPERATE AT THE DEMAND OF A WORK TIME CLOCK to do jobs, collectively function, and take care of responsibilities as Pluto in Capricorn makes its final stands and the nature of what it is to “work” and what it is to “earn” has been reconfigured, with more people working from home than ever, and the world carrying on just fine that way.

Innovation in technology will be unparalleled, but the potential for it to be destructive is high.  It’s like taking off a parking brake, and things may spiral rapidly over the next few years.  We will see the value of technology through the lens of restructuring and downfall, and we must be cautious of the manipulative possibilities it entails.  Anything that can operate on a collective level cannot be trusted, it will be at the behest of Pluto’s grasp of control and power dynamics.  Quantum research and quantum technology will be a major forefront of discovery, but at least in the first few years of the transit, Capricorn will still be seeking to control and monetize and profit and make the most of these things without consideration of the benefit or harm to the collective.  This is a real life Dr. Malcolm “ your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should” moment in history if ever there was one.  Pluto says we have to make those mistakes if we’re ever going to learn accountability for how we wield the egoless power of Aquarius, all rational, emotion justified and rationalized.

In political consideration, of course, we have to consider this time of revolution and rebellion to be ready for an uprising.  Politics as a polarity will be challenged, as more people think in an independent Aquarian manner and the days of being so easily manipulated by both sides are going to be over after whatever political revolution arises. This Pluto engages in the dark side of intellectual prowess.   In this country, BOTH sides are in for a fall.  However that happens, Pluto will ensure that politics becomes more truly representative.  The Capricorn archetype of crusty old white dudes who feel entitled to power will be no more, and that is most likely to become apparent during the Retrograde period when Pluto regresses after having had a taste of Aquarian liberation.

Aquarius is the sign of cutting edge learning and knowledge, and barriers imposed upon knowledge and information will be stripped away.  This is the first time in human history that while it’s far from perfect, socioeconomic barriers to KNOWLEDGE are at an all time low, we have work to do, but in a general sense, access to learning is more abundant than it has ever been, and barriers in this regard will continue to fall away.  The accessibility of education will be a big issue under this Pluto transit, and we will come out the other side with a more diverse spectrum of opportunity as systems are torn down and reconstructed in a more egalitarian and Aquarian regard.

Aquarius is an egalitarian sign that first and foremost does what it must for survival in the future, and then it turns focus upon the collective.  We will ALL be challenged to become better humans, and once that happens for ourselves, we must then take what we’ve learned into the collective and live our passions, contributing and teaching and seeking to make the world a better place.  The feeling I have most strongly about this transit is “When we know better, we do better.”  Unfortunately, when it comes to the resistance to change that humans typically espouse, sometimes that “knowing” better comes with hard lessons and a price.  The first step of knowing better is admitting what must be torn down and transformed, and Pluto will wreak havoc in all of those places until we get it right.  When we pay attention on a personal level, it can create big changes on a collective level, so pay attention to these broad themes in your own world, so you can see how it works within the greater context.

Part Two: Pluto Ingress to Aquarius 2024 Evolve and Assimilate or Be Left Behind

Sun conjunct Pluto at 0 Aquarius orb 28 minutes

Moon at 5 Gemini square Saturn at 5 Pisces orb 45 minutes

Venus at 27 Sagittarius square Neptune at 25 Pisces separating orb 1 degree 40 minutes

Uranus at 19 Taurus quincunx the South Node at 19 Libra orb 22 minutes

Pluto, planet of deepest and most profound transformation, is now entering Aquarius, where it will be tearing through this sign for the next 20 years.  Two decades is a long time to spend with the harbinger of change through excavation in this Saturn ruled sign that will dig into issues of power dynamics and control that revolve around the power of community, the tribe, collective success through individual excellence, and Fixed Air cerebral evolution.  Pluto in Aquarius, as I’ve often said, will also delve deep within the dark side of technology and how we use it, consciousness and how we understand it and work with it, and advances in all areas of the scientific frontlines.  Pluto, at its core, reveals the raw, the broken, the painful truth…and Aquairus is an evidence based sign, making Pluto’s influence here one that will be both shocking and undeniable.  Aquarius has the ability to accept and assimilate new information rapidly, and active Aquarius transits are a time of exponential growth and innovation.  What happens when the planet digging through this sign is one that first must confront everything that is WRONG?   We certainly will receive an intense introduction to what we may be facing, given that Pluto crosses this threshold still conjunct the Sun, which, once it enters Aquarius, is in its sign of detriment.  Within the first month of this transit, which happens at the very initiation of Sun in Aquarius, Mercury, Venus, and Mars will ALL encounter their first taste of conjunctions to Pluto in this place where they will now be within its grasp for the next 20 years, a barrage of aspects that will be important to observe understand as they unfold.  The entire month of February will be characterized by Pluto introducing himself to the inner planets, and these conjunctions are going to show us rather clearly how this transit will feel as they occur.  Be aware, and pay attention.

Pluto in Aquarius is here to confront the demons lurking in the shadows surrounding both that which makes us human and how we integrate the concept of consciousness.  It's no secret that the “Age of Aquarius” is a herald of expansion of consciousness and is supposed to be a time where humanity embraces a common vision, one of evolution.  Pluto entering this sign may, indeed, be the dawn of this astrological age that we’ve been debating over the “beginning” point of since the 1960’s.  Ask 5 astrologers when this era is set to begin, and you will inevitably receive at least 3 different answers.  One thing that anyone worth their salt can agree upon is that this outer planet ingress is one of the most powerful and important of our lifetimes.  This is a new generational zeitgeist, one that will be empowered through seeking to understand the dark side of human nature through a lens of rational detachment, and cold, calculating ingenuity.  This will be a time of technological advances that must be morally and ethically reviewed, and may be highly contested.  Aquarius is a sign of intensely defended principles and ethics, but they are focused upon what is for the good of the collective, and they are individually defined.  Pluto in Aquarius is ready to carve out a better distant future, and in the present, that entails a purge of everything that is incongruent with an ethical distribution of power.  We can expect the topics of equality in all regards and of undermining the long standing primarily unchecked patriarchal domination that we’ve experienced under Pluto in Capricorn to be in for a long overdue confrontation that will lead to a more balanced distribution of power.  First, that involves stripping it away through potentially catastrophic scenarios, because when change occurs in this sign that functions at a societal level, it takes massive realizations to effect necessary change.  Those born under this decisive and rationally inspired, cerebral Pluto will analyze with rapid processing and identify solutions through pattern based problem solving and will have no hesitation when it comes to rebelling against previously held convention and tradition.  This generation is here to rebel and to be the revolution that we need, and they will be fearless and passionate arbiters of change.

As Pluto is a generational planet, Pluto holds dominion over entire generational periods that learn about the nature of power and the temptation of control according to the Pluto sign under which they were born.  This time around, Pluto will be in a Fixed sign, making this transit the most intense when it is in aspect to any Fixed planets or angles, particularly the Pluto in your natal chart.  The Pluto in Leo generation (Baby Boomers) in particular may have difficulty accepting the changes that are to come, those who experience their Pluto opposition are always forced to let go of generational expectations, and the Pluto in Leo generation will be particularly resistant to giving up the power to which they feel entitled.  This means both politically and personally.  The loss of independence and the need to admit that it’s time to pass the torch will be intensely painful for this generation that entails pride as a formative aspect of identity.  Whether physically, emotionally, monetarily, or spiritually, the Pluto in Leo generation must endure these realizations.  The Pluto in Virgo generation (late Boomers and early Gen X) and Pluto in Cancer (the Silent Generation) will experience a quincunx to their natal Pluto, one that causes tension and friction, but to which there is no solution and action can be difficult to harness.   The Pluto in Scorpio generation (Millennials) will undergo their Pluto square, the mid-life transit that often forces painful lessons of devastating loss or realizations about the illusion of control.  Just when we think we have control, the Pluto square reminds us that it’s all an illusion.  In the sign of Scorpio, this generation was born for transformation, and the nature of it will be one that seethes beneath the surface long before it’s provoked out into the light of day.  The Pluto in Libra generation (Gen-X/Xennials) and the Pluto in Sagittarius generation (Gen Z) will get a lovely sextile from Pluto in Aquarius, and that will affirm the reasons behind any difficulties and places where they’ve experienced disempowerment…for the Pluto in Libra generation, this will be most welcome in the aftermath of their Pluto square.  For Pluto in Sagittarius, they’re just getting started on this journey, and they’ll navigate solutions through the support of hive-mind and community, in coming together and finding their tribe at an early age, carving out their place within the world.

It’s time to embrace the power of the mind, and many of the issues we must confront under this transit will lie upon the Leo/Aquarius axis, where we experience issues of heart vs. head, of ego vs consciousness.   Leo is independent, whereas Aquarius is concerned with the collective.  Leo is Sun ruled Fire performance and creativity, whereas Aquarius is Saturn ruled Air principles and logic.  All Fixed signs are fiercely ingrained within their own schema, and Aquarius is the most open minded of the Fixed signs…but once we are set upon our path and have decided the boundary, we hold exceedingly firm and are unwavering, and we only change our minds at our own behest.  Pluto in Aquarius will have no tolerance for the old way of doing things, the “we’ve always done it this way” will not be an excuse any longer, and this will be a time of getting with the times or being left behind.  The world is ready for change, and it’s going to happen whether we accept it or not.  Whatever is lurking within the darker nature of consciousness, whatever shadows we need to confront at the core of what it means to be human are now up for scrutiny, and Pluto is in a sign that is intent upon evolution at all costs.  Of course, Fixed signs may have difficulty bending to outside forces of control, and Pluto may have to expose particularly raw nerves to inspire the movement necessary for us to evolve…or, we can consciously choose to listen the first time around, because the less we resist, the more productive Pluto transit aspects can be.  Aquarius faces things with the brain, rationally detached and ready to start a revolution.  That’s where we need to be in whatever regard Pluto decides to pull the rug out from underneath us within the collective and in the context of social structures.

Sun conjunct Pluto at 0 Aquarius orb 28 minutes

This ingress chart is immensely powerful, and shows us the challenges that will arise in coming weeks.  Pluto is a long term transit, to be sure, but it will once again only make it to 2 degrees before it will Station Retrograde in May and then walk all the way back to revisit 29 Capricorn until it crosses this threshold for the final time on November 19 of this year.  What we see in this ingress chart must be considered in the context of the exactitude of the Sun/Pluto conjunction that came immediately before, in Capricorn, and as we now slink and slither underneath that still glaring light, the Sun/Pluto conjunction takes on a different nature.  The key here is to remember that Sun is in detriment in Aquarius. It is now in the sign opposite that of its rulership, Leo, and as such the expression has changed, darkened.  This state of “detriment” does not mean that Sun is ineffectual here, and that’s a common misconception.  It means that the things that Sun is strongest in are the things that we now, under this Pluto conjunction, will find to be repulsive, and things that set the stage for rebellion.  Heightened dramatics over things that do not actually matter, issues of the ego, and power dynamics that manifest in jealousy/possessive tendencies are things that will be prominently challenged as Sun in this place where it’s at its “weakest” within the Zodiac is now within Pluto’s grasp.  WEAK does not mean ineffectual, again…I interpret this along the lines of Leo Sun is bright and bold and wears its heart on it’s sleeve, while Aquarius Sun, no matter how it’s cerebrally driven intent is explained, is often misunderstood or misperceived, and though Aquarius Sun has a crystal clear and decisive fixed nature, the battle is getting others to see the world the way that Aquarius does.  Well, given this Sun/Pluto conjunction that dances across the ingress together, the world has no choice.  We no longer GET to stay focused solely upon our own needs, desires, and ego…Aquarius Sun conjunct Pluto at this crucial 0 degree says that the core meaning of both the individual and how it fits within the collective is going to undergo a profound shift.  How does that happen?  By revealing all of the things that we DO NOT want to espouse in order to decide what IS the right place for us…and Aquarius has no inherent need to fit in, so as the nature of social structure and hierarchy changes, this will be a rough time for anyone who relies upon power that is previously assumed through means that no longer matter, like money (Capricorn), beliefs (Sagittarius), sex appeal (Scorpio), conventional relationship or social justice expectations (Libra) and so on…what matters now is the power of the MIND, unity and a more global approach, and recognizing that there is strength rather than weakness in the differences that make us unique and individual.  This will be a major tension at the beginning of the transit as we had the culmination of Sun/Pluto at 29 Capricorn, and that type of influence will only grasp harder for control as it slips away now that we’re going to be focused elsewhere.

Moon at 5 Gemini square Saturn at 5 Pisces orb 45 minutes

As if beliefs weren’t already up for restructuring and review with Saturn in Pisces, Moon squares Saturn to the degree in this ingress chart, and this lays the groundwork for tension that arises between this hyperdrive Gemini Moon that fluctuates into new ideas and spaces as quickly as we can assimilate them, and Saturn in Pisces that ebbs and flows with the current, that is a planet of consistency and discipline in a sign that wavers and is moved by what we perceive…and none of it may be true, because we’re accepting it as truth here while we should be questioning the nature of it.  This is a square that makes it difficult to gain any ground, Saturn is in the sign next door to Pluto, so they aren’t going to see one another for quite awhile, in terms of aspect.  That won’t happen until they sextile while Saturn is in Aries in a few years.  Pluto will, however, encounter a trine to Gemini Moon many many times during its transit here, and it’s important to remember that this Air trine is intellectual on both ends, with Pluto being in Aquarius we encounter the need to be RIGHT as a driving force of all that we seek to uncover, we want to get to the core…and Gemini Moon may have trouble doing that if we don’t settle in and hold any one focus long enough to examine it in enough detail to decide.  The Gemini Moon/Saturn square in this chart suggests that getting to the truth under the beginning of this Pluto transit may be obscured by both distraction (Gemini Moon) and previously held beliefs that we’re already resistant to giving up or redefining (Saturn in Pisces) and if that’s the case, if it’s beliefs standing in the way, Pluto in Aquarius will have no qualms about destroying them with cold, hard fact and reality before we can even blink.  This is where science (Pluto in Aquarius) may begin to explain, on unprecedented levels, the nature of mysticism and consciousness (Saturn in Pisces) and we’re going to have to integrate an acceptance of fact in such a way that our truths and what we hold to be spiritual truths can remain explained and either evolve and assimilate, or be disregarded and left behind in the past where they belong.  Gemini Moon offers the power to THINK, and especially to DEBATE our way through this process rather than FEELING it like Saturn in Pisces is more inclined to.

Venus at 27 Sagittarius square Neptune at 25 Pisces separating orb 1 degree 40 minutes

The Venus/Neptune square that I discussed at length in my analysis of the Sun/Pluto conjunction at 29 Capricorn is still in tight orb under the ingress to Aquarius, and at the end of the signs they don’t make any aspects to Pluto, but this square offers insight into the changing nature of RELATIONSHIPS, and suggests that under Pluto in Aquarius, leaving them will be less draining, Venus in Sagittarius has less of an issue sauntering away unscathed than other Venus influences, and there is almost a refusal to commit in the first place that saves us the pain and the difficulties that come with deep sudden commitment and idealized expectations…this square also suggests that believing the best in other people is where we will be most deeply impacted, so perhaps as Pluto courses through Aquarius emphasizing the relationship with community and the collective and the tribe, perhaps we first ensure that partnerships of all types are aligned with our principles, ethics, and expectations within Aquarian regard first.  Connections that do not entail an equal meeting of the minds may become unbearable and intolerable, and being misunderstood will lead to cold detachment and less investment in the places where our individuality is not accepted.  This square digs into the reality behind what we’ve accepted in the past, and Pluto in Aquarius will be rewiring how we, as a collective, experience tolerance/intolerance and forcing us to focus upon ways to work together whether we like it or not.

Uranus at 19 Taurus quincunx the South Node at 19 Libra orb 22 minutes

Quincunxes are tricky aspects, and this one is important.  A quincunx is a tension that I describe as a push/pull, it’s not a battle of opposites, but neither is more supported or profound than the other, and there is no easy way to resolve it.  In this case, we have Uranus, planet of change through disruption and epiphany, which is considered to resonate strongly with the nature of Aquarius (I use Traditional rulership but do see the resonance that outer planets have in certain signs though I do not describe it as rulership) in the sign of Taurus, which, when we consider this is an outer planet and we’re looking at an outer planet transit, in terms of GLOBAL and collective influence, is a sign of material wealth building, how we use resources, and the body itself.  Uranus creates instability to bring issues to our attention, and in this case, the quincunx isn’t to another planet, but to the South Node, in Libra.  The Nodes are where we experience Eclipses, and are not a place that “affect” us but they are a place where we are affected by planetary transits.  They are the lens through which Moon influences us, and in this case, we have a flittering and skittering Gemini Moon, quick to experience all sides of things and embrace a spectrum of experience driving us with relentless curiosity…and the Libra South Node, a place where we are challenged to let go of and leave behind old relationship baggage and patterns of appeasement or hesitation where we should have acted.  Uranus in its instability and demand may now make it IMPOSSIBLE to ignore Libra South Node issues we still cling to, and given that we have the most powerful Eclipse of this series coming at us in April and it will be conjunct Chiron, perhaps the Uranus events that seek to provoke change during this time should be heeded and handled.

Uranus in Taurus wants to create a stronger sense of stability, ultimately, but it does so through events and situations to which we have to REACT.  Gemini Moon says react with rapid fire ideas and analysis, and throw ourselves at the best ones and go all in.  All of this to say, trust not your GUT, but your THOUGHTS if any events transpire that may indeed be a twist of fate during this time.  The goal of the Nodes is to steer us toward where we should be going, and this specifically does not aspect the North Node in a way we can perceive, but the shock and awe in the unexpected and seemingly unresolvable quincunx is here to get us THINKING, and planning and plotting even if we can’t immediately ACT.  Uranus is also grinding down to Station Direct here on January 27, and will be in aspect to the South Node until February 9, given the two degree orb that I use for quincunx relationships.  Keep paying attention to this influence and any tension that surrounds relationships, finances, joint finances, security, resources of all kinds, and patterns of appeasement and inhibition to act which are the difficulties of the Libra South Node.

These aspects within the ingress chart characterize this part of the transit of Pluto through Aquarius, and will be with us until it dips back into Capricorn during Retrograde, which I will also detail and analyze at that time, as well as the Retrograde Station.  Until that time, here are the planetary aspects that Pluto will navigate as it transits the first two degrees of this unconventional sign of evolution through revolution:
